From the Mouse Scout Handbook: Blackberries!

Nothing says late summer like blackberries! They grow wild in fields and on the edge of forests. A little bit of time spent picking blackberries will be rewarded with a delicious treat that can be turned into a delightful breakfast, a nutritious snack or a creative and delicious dinner.

A few words of caution: Blackberry bushes are very thorny. It is a good idea to wear long sleeves when picking them. Blackberry bushes are popular with bees, wasps and hornets. Try not to disturb them or they will sting! Blackberries are also a popular snack for bears, who are busy eating as much as they can before their long winter's nap. Bears are generally afraid of mice but it is best to keep your distance.

In spite of the dangers involved, picking blackberries is a satisfying way to spend your time. Break up a berry and mix it with a tablespoon of oatmeal to make a delicious breakfast for your whole family. You may also put them in pancakes or muffins. Mash a blackberry with a teaspoon of sugar and bring to a boil, for a a quick and easy blackberry jam. A whole blackberry stuffed with cheese makes a dramatic centerpiece and festive party dish. However you choose to enjoy your harvest, blackberries are a delicious and satisfying treat!
